Roman is a proud first-generation student born and raised in San Diego, California, in a strong Portuguese immigrant family background. Incorporating his love and passion from zoology to mechanical engineering and robotics, political science, or philosophy, and even live music, he's beyond grateful to the Yardi program and Berkeley for enabling him to further his education. He is equally excited to envision a better world alongside his fellow Yardi scholars.

Silvkeang Yem

Major: Civil Engineering
2026-2027 Cohort

Silvkeang “Suki” Yem is a first-generation, Cambodian student majoring in Civil Engineering. Suki's purpose is to give back to her community and build lasting infrastructure that will leave her mark on the world. Hiking, reading, rock-climbing are some of the activities Suki enjoys in her free time. From staying in the same hometown all her life to moving hundreds of miles away, Suki is excited to learn about passion, people, and herself!

Sky Bui

First-Year | Major: Bioengineering

Sky was born in Port St. Lucie, Florida and raised in Orange County, California. His favorite pastimes include doing art, hiking, playing tennis, and going to the gym. With a strong passion for STEM and creativity, Sky plans to pursue a career in the Engineering field to develop affordable and reliable products for the underserved.

Soraya Amin

Major: Cognitive Science
2026-2027 Cohort

Soraya Amin is a first-generation transfer student majoring in Cognitive Science. She is interested in business and technology, especially how people think and make decisions. Soraya is passionate about leadership and supporting immigrant youth. Outside of academics, she enjoys going to cafés with friends and traveling. As she transfers to UC Berkeley, she is excited to grow and explore new opportunities connected to technology and business.

Winnie Liao

Major: Political Economy

Winnie is a leader rooted in the belief that the most important growth happens before you can see it. Her experience spans government, non-profits, and business, motivating her to major in Political Economy. Winnie is also passionate about mukbanging (making eating videos), beauty, and spiritual wellness.

Yumi Zhao is a first-generation student majoring in bioengineering. Yumi also enjoys watching Anime, listening to music and trying new hobbies. After transferring from Irvine Valley College. Yumi is ready to embrace challenges and happiness ahead.

Yvonne Guan is a first-year student planning to major in Political Economy. Raised in Canton and now living in Palos Verdes, Yvonne’s multicultural background shapes her passion for community building and economic justice. Yvonne also enjoys wandering museums, café-hopping, and shopping. Although moving to Berkeley marks a big transition, Yvonne is excited to meet new people, explore fresh ideas, and grow.

Zachary Sy

Transferring from Chabot Community College as a Mechanical Engineering major, Zachary Sy is a first-generation student with an interest in bio-medical research and technology. Zachary enjoys his time by reading comics, enjoying nature, and, of course, eating delicious food. He’s excited to embrace new experiences and take his educational journey to the next level.

Zen enjoys deeply engaging local issues, interviewing people from diverse backgrounds, and using writing to educate and connect communities. Outside of academic pursuits, Zen enjoys photography, hiking, sports, travel, and creative activities like drawing and music. Having learned through significant challenges, Zen is excited to embrace the multitude of new opportunities presented by UC Berkeley.

Zoe is from a sunny southern California city. She's excited about following her dreams 400 miles north at UC Berkeley. Zoe adores pets and is a proud cat and dog mom to her babies back home. With her pets by her side, Zoe loves writing, whether it be plans for a future novel or an analytical review of her current favorite show.
